A 4-star Winery

The team at Broken Gate are stoked to be rated a 4 star winery by James Halliday. Six of our wines have been included in his 2011 Wine Companion.

Some of the top reviews included:

“4 and a half stars - Side Gate Geelong Shiraz 2007 –  Strong colour, a fragrant bouquet of dark berries and spice, then a polished and supple medium-bodied palate, red fruits emerging along with black, fine savoury tannins on the finish. Screwcap. 13.5% alc. Rating 93.

Side Gate Clare Valley Riesling 2008 – Has a zesty, brisk bouquet, then an attractive, long palate with intense lime/citrus flavours, purchased in bulk, bottled by Broken Gate – a spectacular example of the availability of high-quality wine in these times of surplus. Screwcap. 12.5% alc. Rating 92.”

Side Gate Strathbogie Ranges Sauvignon Blanc 2009 - Light straw-green, some herb and grass aromas, the palate adding citrus and a hint of passion fruit, well-made wine. Silver medal Concours des Vins, Melbourne. Screwcap. 12.5% alc. Rating 90.

(Broken Gate) Clare Valley Shiraz 2008 – Solid red-purple, interesting wine – the question is whether there is low-level, volatile acidity, but even if there is, it only serves to lift the aromas and flavours, all up, has more vibrancy than many, and the balance is good. Screwcap. 14.2% alc. Rating 90.
